Ever since our first meeting at this year's Munich High End – see here – we've been very interested in Gait's glass-cone speakers. The Taiwanese company is the leader and the benchmark in such a specific production sector, read few lines from their own words here.

Some weeks ago, they kindly made a set of their speakers available to us, which our own Max Conforti is currently testing.

While we wait for his contribution to the understanding of this innovative type of speaker, I asked the company a few simple questions to help readers get to know it, so Mr Kit Chan from Gait kindly replied us.

Question: What's next for Gait? Do you want to establish yourself as a supplier of glass diaphragms for other manufacturers? Do you want to establish yourself as a manufacturer of glass cone drivers under your own brand? Or do you also want to expand your catalogue of complete speakers with glass cone drivers? Obviously, one solution does not exclude the others, but we'd like to know directly from you if you've already developed a clear market direction.

Kit Chan: Gait is the world first ultra-thin glass diaphragm manufacturer. We provide ultra-thin glass diaphragm for other speaker manufacturers. These are already in market, for instance in the Mark Audio Alpair 5G speaker, see here, or in the Blaupunkt MPS 1652 C38H car speaker, see here.

Beside selling glass diaphragm, we also have glass cone drivers under our own brand for Hi-Fi, car and headphones applications. Our roadmap is expanded the product line to 1.5”, 2”, 3” and 4” speaker drivers.

Question: Do you want to share any technical specifications regarding your glass acoustic diaphragm?

Chan: Sure, find some preliminary acoustic information of the glass material in PDF here. The thickness of the ultra-thin glass is from 25 μm to 700 μm – Ed. | To understand the dimensions we're in, read here. The most unique characteristic of the glass in acoustic application is high damping factor. It is almost ten times of the other isometric hard material such as aluminium, titanium, ceramic and diamond. This characteristic let the high clarity sound colour of the glass with warm and sweet signature.

Question: Do you have any technical information regarding the manufacturing process of your glass cones? Is there anything you can or would like to share with our readers? Every technical aspect is highly valued by audiophiles, as you know.

Chan: Glass cutting process is very important for us because breaking is always from the edge of the material. Our cutting process have a very smooth edge. No micro cracking over 50 μm will be happened in cutting process. The 200 μm thickness woofer cone can support over 15 kg force without breaking. So, the glass woofer speaker can support high power handling without breaking.
