Hadouk Trio with Malouma | Baldamore Live

Hidden Masterpieces
01.03.2012

This splendid issue of the naïve label would deserve much more space than these few lines but I just want to bring this work to your attention. Baldamore Live is an extremely interesting work and the edition comes with an even more interesting DVD that includes the concert gig, a 30’ documentary, the interviews, a photo gallery and more. The technical quality of both publications reaches very high levels. Nothing out of the ordinary if you consider that the sound recording, the mixing and the mastering have been edited by Philippe Teissier du Cros, one of the most skilled operant sound engineers.

The documented encounter between the Hadouk Trio (Didier Malherbe, Steve Shehan and Loy Ehrlich) and the amazing Mauritanian singer Malouma Mint Meidah, took place on the 22-23 May 2007 at the Cabaret Sauvage in Paris for a double concert. Hadouk Trio is a very impressive combination of world music, jazz, Mauritanian songs, multiethnic percussions, Armenian winds and worldwide folkloric instruments. Hadouk Trio has its roots in the 70’s with the presence of Malherbe in the Gong’s group, but the Trio has been existing since the end of the 90’s, initially as a duo and then in the definitive formation with the entrance of the percussionist Steve Shehan. Unfortunately, we do not know very much about Malouma and Mauritanian music and only from a couple of years her records have been available on the foreign markets. She is nevertheless one of most fascinating artist of the Arabic-African musical world.

So far, Baldamore Live is one of the best examples of world music and for this reason I suggest to enjoy the listening and have a look at the following links:
